| Mitek Computers Standard Service and Common Rates
Effective June 1st 2008 If there is one thing I hate as a business owner it is readjusting our labor rates and prices on our hardware. Since early 2001 Mitek Computers LLC has had but one rate increase in 2004-2005, and to be quite honest it didn't hurt our business in the least. The main reason for the increase at that time was our store overhead had went up immensely from the day we moved in, the new servers we had installed in order to become a Southeast Telephone agent, and numerous other things that was making it hard to show a profit that we consider reasonable in order to meet day to day expenses and to maintain the technicians we have on staff as independent contractors.. At the time the rate increase was $10.00 per hour across the board, but we were able to make up for it by lowering the prices on our computers and other hardware, and cut back on un-necessary items, so it was truly not much of an increase at all. During the past 12 months or so, however, especially due to now ownership of the building in which our business is housed, the aggressive lease we are bound to that automatically increases for ever year we are there, along with fuel prices that have affected everything else it is with a heavy heart and a painful decision that our rates must be increased in order to provide the high quality service that our customers expect from us. This in addition to the HUGE growth of SouthEast Telephone since we have taken on becoming a payment center, has increased our overhead by almost 30% overall. Shipping rates have tripled and even quadrupled on parts that are ordered, and the inventory we keep in stock now (normally around $50,000.00 or more) loses value faster than ever before. Add to this the fact that Windows XP stops production on June 31st 2008, and Vista will become the main operating system within the next 12 months has pretty much forced us into rates, that we probably would not have considered until 2010 or so. Add to this the fact that our apprentice technicians, as well as our independent contractor technicians need more money than ever in order to get to and from work, as well as perform service calls. We have shrank our geographic service area down to within 100 miles of Mitek Computers, and rates outside Madison county or more than 25 miles from our shop will also be increased as a result of the higher fuel prices. WE ARE THE ONLY CERTIFIED MEDIA RECOVERY SPECIALISTS IN THE AREA. "Why is data recovery important so important to me?" you may ask. You think " I have a great backup plan, and I follow it to the letter everyday! What am I missing?" WHAT CAN HAPPEN AND USUALLY DOES? All it takes is losing one hard drive, and suddenly it becomes very apparent! Case in point. We have a medical group we work with quite often. As with any medical organization they use certain billing and appointment software that is crucial in order for their business to run smoothly. The program itself is very small, and uses a Microsoft Access database in order to store the information. Normally you would install a program such as this on one computer, have the database on the same computer, and then since the program is configured to run across a local area network (LAN) you would simply drag shortcuts from the executable for the program to any other computer on the network in order to open the program from any workstation. This group of individuals were doing everything correctly. They were running differential backups every night by burning them to CD, as well as doing full backups every week. Of course the hard drive died very recently, just a small 30GB drive, and they thought "No problem" We will simply install a new hard drive, reinstall the OS, the drivers, and all updates We will then install Microsoft Office and the program itself, and then simply import the backups. No biggie as this is the ONLY program that runs on this particular computer... RIGHT? Wrong! Just as fate would have it, the CDRW in the system had not been recording for over a year. With an average of 40-50 patients per day, 5 days per week, this would equal 250 patients and records for those patients on a weekly basis. Multiply that by 52 weeks in a year and you have a whopping 13000 records that were missing.. .WOW!!!! In comes our Mitek Recovery Specialist and thankfully we were able to recover the data by simply replacing the preamp on the hard drive, and backing up the information to CD using a recovery software that costs us in the neighborhood of $4500.00 annually. This was no ones fault, simply because the CDRW LOOKED as if it were burning. Lights would turn red/orange and then the program popup would state "Backup Completed Successfully" at the end of the backup session... problem was the actual CDRW itself. We replaced the CDRW, tested the backups, and wallah, everything worked perfectly. Most IT guys would stop there and in all reality that would be OK in most instances. However, we then added a second backup solution.. a very small 80GB external hard drive to which we also added the backups, and as one more tiny precaution we added a 2GB USB Key Drive the office manager/LPN could use on a daily basis as a backup solution to the first backup solution, which was in control of the program backups. Most technicians would say "That's overkill Mike". I say what we did was necessary, safe, and truly cost effective. The entire backup solution less the new internal hard drive and labor came to a total of less than $175.00. $175.00 to buy peace of mind, knowing that situation will never happen again, and never again will they lose their patient records to fate.. a bargain, and as they would say in a MasterCard commercial... "Priceless!" RECOVERY...RECOVERY...RECOVERY At Mitek Computers in Berea Ky we also offer many

partner has the ability to disassemble the drive, remove the
platters that contain the information, and then place any

Protecting yourself is always the first rule of securing data in any environment be it business or personal. We always suggest that customers with sensitive or irreplaceable data have a backup plan that combines differential with incremental and full backup solutions, which Mitek Computers in Berea Ky can provide at prices that are much less than a single recovery process. However, if for some reason you have ignored the problems thinking they can only happen to someone else, then you will find that data recovery is much harder and much more expensive than having a backup solution in the beginning. Remember the following if nothing else, especially if your business depends on data (and this is what all businesses are comprised of no matter what they may believe). If you follow the simple suggestions we have below, you should never need a recovery solution at all. Not having any type of backup solution is the worst plan ever, and if you are running your business without a backup plan of one sort or another, you are doomed for failure, and worse yet, may be doomed for bankruptcy. If you have any sensitive customers data stored without any sort of backup solution, then there is always the possibility a customer will sue you until your pockets are so empty the devil wouldn't even have enough room to dance. Backups... Backup... Backup. It's simple, it is inexpensive, and can save your company in case of a catastrophic failure. Secondly, and just as important is to have a recovery solution in case the backup plan fails. This way you cover all of your bases, which in turn leaves your business and your customers information protected and safe from loss. HARDWARE DISPOSAL - PLEASE READ - EPA REGULATIONS INSIST ON PROPER DISPOSAL OF PARTS Please note that we save all parts for the customer to see when we do ANY HARDWARE replacements. Customer is responsible for disposing of any parts. Due to latest EPA laws, there is a MINIMUM $5.00 FEE added to any invoice for EACH PIECE of hardware Mitek Computers disposes of when asked by the customer. There are no exceptions to this disposal fee.. It is much LESS EXPENSIVE for the customer to dispose of their own old hardware and/or parts. There are SPECIAL FEES associated with some parts we have to dispose of IF the customer leaves them with us. Again there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule as this is exactly what we are charged if we do not discharge and dispose of certain items properly, then we are fined a MINIMUM of $250.00 by the EPA for each outstanding violation.
COMPUTERS NOT PICKED UP OR LEFT MORE THAN 30 DAYS - KY ABANDONMENT LAW FOR ELECTRONICS READ CAREFULLY...YOU COULD LOSE YOUR COMPUTER TO ABANDONMENT IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS REPAIRED BUT NOT PICKED UP: Customers that leave a computer with us for repair, and we do so will receive a phone call or voice mail message from us stating their computer is ready for pickup. The customer has 72 business hours (3 days) to pickup the computer, otherwise there will be a 2.00 per day storage fee for each day past the 3rd day up to a maximum of $50.00 storage fee. After 30 days the computer is considered abandoned, and Mitek Computers of its own accord and under Ky statutes and laws will sell the computer or dispose of it as we see fit. Abandonment does not require us to write registered letters to the customer or mail anything at all. We must only show phone records where we called, dates messages were left, and one attempt via regular postal mail, stating that if the system is not picked up by (insert date here) computer will be old for the outstanding invoice and storage or nay price we see fit, or disposed of. NO REPAIR NO PICKUP: <b>Mitek Computers LLC</b> is ONLY responsible for ANY system that has been left at our premises for 30 days or more. Even if we do not sell or dispose of the system, the customer has no recourse or legal action after the 30 day period, and the computer belongs to Mitek Computers under Ky's abandonment law for electronics. We are also not responsible for computers left for more than 30 days that we did nothing to for whatever reason. If a customer comes in anytime after the 30 day period, wanting the system back, and we cannot find it for whatever reason, again the customer has no recourse. We do not have the room for storage, and even if we did we will stick to our guns on the abandonment law. We are not a storage facility. After 30 days the computer is as good as gone under Ky law. If customer does have the $50.00 storage fee and the 49.00 evaluation fee, and IF and only IF we can find the system, we will return it to the customer for a total of $99.00. Again there is no exception to this rule and law. WE ARE NOT A STORAGE OR LOAN COMPANY: In all honesty we are tired of storing a computer for 3 months to upwards of 3 years, only to be threatened by a lawsuit if we do not return the item, or when we ask for the storage and evaluation fees, again we are threatened with violence or lawsuits. This is the reason we give our customers the 3 business day grace period to pick up the system. If you are having financial difficulties, then its simply a mater of calling us at 859-985-0050 if you wish to set up some terms. We are not unreasonable. Its just that we do not have the space available to us for the massive amounts of storage it takes for computers and parts, and keeping track of them all is a nightmare. We will ALWAYS use the Ky abandonment law in any case that goes to court, and we always keep the paperwork to back it up. Put it this way. We have never lost in small claims court, and we always win any counterclaim for storage, repairs, and evaluation fees. The best thing to do is always pickup the computer within the 3 day period. That way there is no confusion. PRE-REPAIR CLAUSE FOR CUSTOMERS WITH ISSUES BEYOND THEIR IMMEDIATE CONTROL Please Note: If at the time of drop off you inform us, and we note it on the work ticket, that you will not be able to pickup the computer within the 3 day pickup period, and as long as you give us a date that is not more than 10 business days out (2 weeks) you will be covered by our pre-repair clause. In essence this means that since you were honest enough to tell us in advance that you will be picking up the system within 7-10 business days, we will honor that grace period, and not charge storage. We do understand that at times you may be going on vacation, going to the hospital, etc. and we are human and we do understand. We will offer you the pre-repair clause as LONG AS WE KNOW. We will also make exceptions to our storage fee etc. if something beyond your control happens as well during teh original 3 day grace period for pickups. But please understand this is a one time deal. You cannot keep calling every 10 days and wish to extend it another 10 days. It wont happen. The abandonment rule applies from the DATE OF COMPUTER DROP OFF and to this there are NO EXCEPTIONS!
However, we will not extend
that period at all. If you come in 1 day past the date you gave us
you WILL be charged the full storage fee for every day from the 3rd
business day. |
