My grandfather died in a tractor accident in 1958 (I was
3 years old) , and the car was passed to my father who was
an only child. My father drove the car from 1958 until 1972
off and on to work as a second car ( a total of 8 miles per
day round trip) he worked as a nerve gas supervisor during
the cold war at a local military and artillery dump
installation.
Every year like clockwork in the fall, we would take it
out of the shed it was stored in that was NOT attached to
the main barn, shine it up, pull it back in after changing
the oil and anti freeze, along with the rear end grease, and
the transmission fluid, and then cover it. We changed the
rear end grease and transmission grease or oil, whichever it
is not every year but every 3-5 years or so. The oil was
changed once yearly, we would take it for a 5-25 mile drive
every time we did this. It was weird I know, but we all have
weird families right?
This was just our family tradition type thing, and the
one thing my father and I enjoyed doing together at that
time, as I was a VERY rebellious 17 year old teenager and my
father and I did have our problems back then. The last time
I know for certain the car was driven fully for more than 10
miles, was to my senior prom in May of 1973.
THE PROM 1973 -CAR IS AS STRAIGHT NOW
AS IT WAS THEN. SURFACE RUST ONLY.
I had spent over a week detailing the car and it was
absolutely beautiful. I have always been a Chevy guy, but at
the time, it was the most beautiful car I had seen and it
would shine like the sun. The paint looked 10 feet deep. I
had to beg my father intensely for two months just to borrow
it that one night, and I really made him mad as I stayed out
all night trying to do the thing that guys that age like to
do with their prom date. Needless to say I DID NOT get lucky
at all and as far as I remember I think that is one of the
only times in my life I was actually slapped by a girl. It
was also the last time I was allowed t use the car with his
knowledge.
MARRIAGE AND KIDS. THINGS GET PUT ON
HOLD
I moved to Florida in 1973 to work for Florida Power and
Light as , met my wife (still married to the same one 32
years now) in 1976 and we married the same year. We moved
back to Ky, and even then in 1980 we would pull out the car,
and he and my younger brother would do the maintenance. My
brother started the car in the fall of 1980 for the
maintenance, the top radiator hose blew, and my father
noticed the water pump leaking. He purchased the water pump
(which is still in the trunk) and that is the way the car
has been since.
The shed started falling apart in 2005, and I ended up
tearing it down at which time I pulled it into the main
barn. I then just recently started cleaning out the main
barn (late 2007) for restoration and paint , and my friends
and I pulled the car to where it is located currently. I
normally keep it covered, and the radiator is drained. The
negative braided battery cable is corroded through. I just
noticed that as I was taking photos.
LAST OF THE MILLENNIUM NEWS. CAR STILL
LOOKS GOOD
It was started and it ran perfectly in 1999, and as far
as I know that was the last time it was started. I can make
no guarantees as to the engine, transmission, or rear end,
but every piece of the car is original and it is just as it
was when it was TRULY driven and parked for the last time in
1973 (see license plate) photo of trunk with lid down.
NEW MILLENNIUM. CAR IS 50 YEARS OLD IN
2000- A MILESTONE
It has the original flathead 6 cylinder engine, the
original 3 speed fluid drive transmission ,the original
seats have NEVER been sat on, as the car came from the
factory with those extremely ugly red and white seat covers.
All rust on the car is what I call surface rust, and I have
looked high and low and have yet to find one place where it
has rusted through. It still has the original 6 volt system,
I am 99.99% certain that nothing that has ever been changed
on the car other than standard things like tires and brakes,
and the exhaust system.
NEVER BEEN WRECKED, DINGED, DAMAGED, OR
HAD BODYWORK PERFORMED OF ANY KIND
I am 100% certain the car has never had any bodywork
performed and it has never been in involved in a wreck.
I can again be 99.99% certain the car was never driven over
70MPH EVER. Media blasting would bring this car back to
life. as the there was no bondo at the factories back then,
and all repairs made at the factory we done with large hot
irons and lead just like old school body guys still do to
this day. The engine will still turn by hand, but you better
have help. Mt friend and I turned it approximately 1/2
revolution 2 months ago , but neither of us are very strong.
He is small, and I am old :)
REASON I AM SELLING. I LOST MY FATHER
AND LOST INTEREST IN THE PROJECT.
I had every intention of restoring the car to its
original condition, BUT my father passed away right
before Christmas 2007, and IT BECAME A MOOT POINT The
only reason i had it at all was that I wished to restore it
, JUST to give it back to him. It never happened for
whatever reason, so I have decided to sell the vehicle to
someone that WILL restore it, and do it the right way and
maybe respect it in a manner that I didn't but should have.
I regret it with all my heart that I was too busy with other
things, as opposed to just restoring the car and seeing the
look on my fathers face when I gave it back to him. I will
never have that chance again.
SOMEONE NEEDS THIS CAR FOR WHATEVER
REASON
There must be someone out there that needs this
car and will treat it with the respect and love it so
desperately deserves. I removed the car cover (boat tarp)
for these photos. If you would like any extra photos, or the
ORIGINAL full size photos or close ups of anything I would
be more than happy to provide them. The tires on the car are
the second set that was ever on the car, and it seems to be
missing 1 or 2 hubcaps. One hubcap is dented as well as the
rear bumper which looks like it may have been hit, but that
could have happened when I was pulling the vehicle from the
shed to the main barn. I do have the true spare by the way
that matches the tires on the car. Full size.
If you look at the photos, it actually was and is a
pretty cool old car. It does have the clock, but no radio.
Underneath the plastic seat covers the seat upholstery is
perfect. the headliner is perfect. The floor is covered with
rubber matting as opposed to carpet UNLESS there is
carpeting beneath the rubber. I have never checked. The
trunk is large enough to store 3-4 bodies.. umm I mean
tires... easily :) <-- That was a joke. This car is HEAVY
and the steel is amazingly thick. The frame is full steel
and I would say the frame weighs more than most cars weigh
today.
I do have a reserve on the car, but if someone comes
close to the reserve I will probably take it. Buyer is
responsible for pickup . Once it is is sold it is sold. It
comes with no warranty other than what I have told you..
This is the original mileage. I am the third owner. It has
been in the same family for 58 years. I guarantee that all
the numbers match. I guarantee that as far as I know all
parts are original with no aftermarkets installed. Email me
if you would like to speak by phone or ask more questions
about the car. I need to get it moved or sell it locally if
selling it here does not work. People stop by all the time
to look at it, and to be honest its getting aggravating.
